John Chak is the founder and lead counsel at Chak Law.  He received his Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) in Criminology at Simon Fraser University and later studied law at the University of Saskatchewan.  John won the top first year mooter award in law school and he later co-published his paper on the Criminal Reports with Professor Glen Luther, QC.  He was also active in the University of Saskatchewan’s clinical law program (CLASSIC), where he served as a student clinician helping the disadvantaged communities.  After he graduated in 2010, John returned to British Columbia and articled with one of the most acknowledged experts in criminal traffic matters, Vincent Michaels.

He later founded Chak Law as a platform to provide much needed high quality legal services for the Chinese community in Richmond.  John has handled many high profile cases, including the notorious street racing case in 2011 and the largest single detached residential transaction in the history of British Columbia.

Personal injury is now John’s primary area of practice, with an exclusive focus on motor vehicle related injuries.   John’s preference is to only take on plaintiff cases.  He sacrifices  the opportunities to earn more by not representing ICBC or defendants in any motor vehicle collisions to prevent actual or the appearance of conflict. He firmly believes that no lawyer can serve two masters.

John’s vision is to expand Chak Law’s leadership role and to groom young lawyers who can provide first class legal services to their respective communities.  He is a dedicated supporter of UBC’s LSLAP program and its Chak Law Chinatown Clinic. John is also an active member of the Grace Evangelical Free Church in Richmond.
